The Labour Mayor, Ken Livingstone, is threatening some of Southwark's unique areas. His efforts to change the designation of Rotherhithe and East Dulwich from 'suburban' to 'urban' mean that he could impose high-rise on these areas - spoiling them forever.
Southwark Liberal Democrats have always opposed this and were shocked when Labour Minister, Ruth Kelly overruled local residents, the Downtown Defence Campaign and, against the ruling of the independent planning inspector, allowed a high rise development to go ahead.
This is just the latest chapter in Labour's efforts to force high-rise where it's not wanted.
We believe that our green spaces are precious and that the Russia Dock Woodland should be protected. For democracy to work it is vital local people are listened to. If you agree and oppose Labour's meddling minister, why not sign our e-petition?
"I, the undersigned, oppose the Labour Government's decision to allow Barratt Homes to build a high-rise development in Downtown. I call on Ruth Kelly MP to reconsider her decision and stop forcing this development on our local community."
